Would you get your broken leg set by a plastic surgeon? Would you buy a car without first giving it a test-drive and reading numerous consumer reviews? You probably don't operate that way. But many people involved in a trauma often hire a personal injury lawyer without looking into the lawyer’s background or determining the lawyer's specialty. Understand that the lawyer you hire will be with you for quite awhile.
Most personal injury and trauma cases typically take more than a year. And the personal injury lawyer you select can dramatically affect the value that the insurance company or the other side puts on your case. This is not a decision to be taken lightly. Contingency fee lawyers usually won’t charge to initially meet with you. Speak to two or three different lawyers to make sure you find one who is the right fit for you. Here are some critical factors you should think about:
* Find out how many years has the firm or lawyer focused in the particular area of law. * Determine if the firm or lawyer is a specialist or generalist. * Does the personal injury law firm have extensive trial experience? If the defending side knows your lawyer settles each and every case and rarely goes to trial, your case will likely suffer as a result. * Does the law firm have a winning trial record? * Determine if the firm has handled similar cases successfully in the past. * Research to learn if the lawyer advances all case costs and charges you nothing unless and until the case is resolved in your favor. * Are the lawyers members of by invitation-only organizations like the American Board of Trial Advocates, American College of Trial Lawyers? * Do the lawyers serve as officers or board members for professional groups like those mentioned above? * Have the lawyers received any awards for the work they've provided for their clients? * Ask if the firm or lawyer is willing to let you speak with past or current clients to discuss their experiences. * Do you like the lawyers, their paralegals and their staff? Do they inspire you with trust?
By asking these questions, you're more like to hire a personal injury attorney that will get you the financial compensation you deserve.
